This piece follows the soil as a narrator and witness to the unfolding histories of human cultivation practices and environmental acts of violence. It seeks to make audible the soil as a living global infrastructure, a container for past and present cultivation knowledges and extraction processes and how these stories can be told through something we often unknowingly depend on for the survival of human and non-human ecologies alike.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Charles Pryor is an artist and agroecologist who works at the intersection of agroecosystem resilience, speculative fiction, permaculture design and ecopedagogy. Charles has led permaculture and agroecology workshops at Sakiya (Palestine), unMonastery (Greece) Goldsmiths University (UK) and Cityplot (Berlin). Exhibitions and events include Feral Kin at Auto Italia South East, Infrastructure/Residence at Jupiter Woods, On Coping: A Reading for Liverpool at The Royal Standard and Storytelling in the Anthropocene at Tenderbooks. He recently completed a Masters in Climate Change and International Development at the University of East Anglia, UK.
Lou-Atessa Marcellin is a cultural producer researching ideas of ecosophy in the ecological framework which interconnects social and environmental spheres. With a background in fine art, a graduate of the Royal College of Art (MA Performance) and UAL Camberwell College of Art (BA Photography), she founded the multidisciplinary research platform Diaspore and more recently a seasonal school called RONCES exploring the making of landscapes in the rural and the urban environment. She has been a visiting lecturer for UAL, the Royal College of Art, The Slade and Goldsmith University.
Marleen Boschen is an artist, curator and doctoral researcher at Goldsmiths, University of London, where she researches seed saving practices as living archives of care for and control of more-than-human futures. In 2019 Marleen co-curated Soil is an Inscribed Body: On Sovereignty and Agropoetics at SAVVY Contemporary in Berlin. From 2013-16 she co-ran Auto Italia, an artist-led organisation in London and has exhibited at Künstlerhaus Bremen, Museum of Modern Art (Bologna), Ithuba (Johannesburg), KunstWerke (Berlin), The Today Museum (Beijing), The Royal Standard (Liverpool) and Jupiter Woods (London), amongst others.
Sara Rodrigues (born in Porto, 1990) is an interdisciplinary artist with a research-led practice working in audiovisual composition and performance. Exploring the interconnectedness of humans with their ecosystems, both micro and macro, she is interested in possible forms of autonomy, resilience and regeneration. Sara has been co-director of the New Maker Ensemble in London since 2016. She holds a BA in Fine Art from The School of Art, Architecture and Design, a BMus in Music and an MFA in Fine Art from Goldsmiths, completing her Junior Fellowship, along with Spiralseed Permaculture ‘Design for Action’ Course in 2020. Recent projects include ‘Peer Forum’ at the Horniman Museum and Gardens and the up-coming exhibition ‘Warm Earth’ at Sismógrafo, Porto. Performance events include Art Night/Chalton Gallery, Block Universe Festival/Kunstraum, Iklectik and Cafe Oto in London.
